Крупная американская компания, владеющая несколькими местными телефонными компаниями (см. LEC) в конкретном географическом регионе. В 1984 г. после отделения от AT&T было образовано семь компаний RBOC: Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Nynex, Pacific Telesis Group, SBC Communications и U.S.West. Однако затем в результате слияния SBC Communications с Pacific Telesis Group и Nynex с Bell Atlantic их число сократилось до пяти.
